Our focus on science and technology
Berkeley Scientific Translation Service was founded by a physicist in 1974 and employs translators specialized in translating scientific journal articles and engineering documents. Our earliest clients included Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia Laboratories, Stauffer Chemical Co., General Motors Research Laboratories, Xerox, Varian, Battelle Institute, The Aerospace Corporation, Physics International, and BioRad Laboratories.
Over the decades we extended our customer base into the biological sciences, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries, with an ever-increasing demand for patent translations. But underlying all these changes is our commitment and expertise in translating the scientific and technical research literature.
Translator selection
Focusing our translations on highly technical subjects in all areas of science and technology forced us to seek out a large number of subject-qualified translators at an early date. Our life science translators will not be selected to translate documents related to digital electronics or nanotechnology, and vice-versa. We always match the translator’s capability to understand the underlying technology with the specific document at hand.
Our procedure
The fundamental way we have done business has never changed despite the increased scope of our work. First, we select the best professional translators available with the necessary subject knowledge of the documents to be translated. Secondly, one of our bilingual editors checks and edits each translator’s work. We have never found a satisfactory shortcut to this process.
